Legendary sledge safari through the Glarus region
A legendary half-marathon on skates: If you link all six Glarus toboggan runs together, you get 28 kilometres of fun on the toboggan. A possible variant of a toboggan safari.
A three-part tour through the valley
1 – Kerenzerberg, 7 km
We start off slowly: in the ‘relaxed’ mode, we take the Kerenzerberg mountain train from Filzbach to Habergschwänd. We have a lot planned: six toboggan runs in two days, crossing the entire Glarus region. A toboggan safari – leg training and a thrill of speed – during the mountain rides on the trains, there is just enough time to enjoy the snow-covered Glarus mountains.
Finally, we reach the top of the Habergschwänd and the safari begins. Feet on the toboggan and leaning back as far as possible. We are definitely not going to let anyone overtake us.
2 – Weissenberge, 3 km
The warm-up round is over, it’s time to get serious: after the Matt-Weissenberge cable car ride, the steep and partly icy Weissenberge route along the Chrauchtal gorge awaits us. It’s almost like a bobsled track with protective side walls, and it feels almost like free fall. Sliding through the finish line in Matt with a laugh, we have to admit: it was actually pretty cool.
3 – Elm, 4 km
Just a few kilometres further on, the next run is waiting for us: Ämpächli Elm Sportbahnen, valley station. Here we practise overtaking manoeuvres, always maintaining the necessary safety distance. We head straight for the pointed Tschingelhörner peaks – will we be able to get through the Martinsloch with enough speed? Once we reach the valley, we have to admit that the illusion has been slightly shattered.
But we have achieved something: 14 kilometres of sledding in one day, now it’s time to relax – the soft beds of the Elmer Hotels are waiting.
On polished skis through the Grosstal valley
4 – Urnerboden, 8 km
After a good night’s sleep, our toboggan safari takes us from the Klein- to the Grossertal. Because of the extensive breakfast, it is almost lunchtime when we arrive at the Urnerboden via the winding Klausenpass road. The Cablecar Urnerboden takes us to the Fisetengrat, from where we have to walk a few more steps to warm up before we start our 8-km toboggan run, the second part of our toboggan safari.
5 – Braunwald Grotzenbüel – Schwettiberg, 3 km
It is already late in the afternoon when we reach Braunwald via the funicular and take a gondola to the Grotzenbüel.A slight pull in the abdominal muscles tells us that we have already completed several toboggan runs. Our plan is to head for the Schwettiberg and then down to the village. This is not an official piste of the Braunwald sports slopes, but it is not a problem if there is enough snow and if we keep an eye out for horse-drawn carriages. Then we head back up to the Grotzenbüel. We refuel with fondue in the Chämistube mountain restaurant, as it is already starting to get dark.
6 – Braunwald Grotzenbüel – Hüttenberg, 3 km
We enjoy the conclusion of the toboggan safari with almost romantic feelings on the illuminated piste to the Hüttenberg. We reflect on the 23 km of tobogganing that we have completed over the last two days. 23 km – more than a half marathon. Or a complete toboggan safari through the Glarus region. Going home now? No, better stay in one of the Braunwalder hotels. All information about the toboggan runs in the Glarus region can be found here.
