Crowd of people raising yellow voting cards at the Landsgemeinde in Glarus, with the Alps in the background.
Thousands of citizens gather on the town square in Glarus to take part in the traditional Landsgemeinde – the open-air assembly where people vote by raising their hands. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Glarus Alps, this centuries-old event is a unique symbol of direct democracy and community spirit in Switzerland.

Landsgemeinde – a living democracy

The Landsgemeinde is probably the most direct form of democracy – and in the canton of Glarus it is also a real folk festival. On the first Sunday in May, the voting population gathers on the wooden ring to ‘minimise and maximise’. It is not just a matter of saying yes or no: everyone can submit motions or propose changes directly at the podium. Votes are cast by raising the voting card, and the Landammann – supported by the government if the vote is close – counts the votes. A piece of living tradition that you simply have to experience.

Glarus products – truly unique

People in Glarnerland create exceptional products with passion. Here, authentic products are created in small family businesses, workshops and farm shops, with great care and sustainability – often using techniques and recipes that have been passed down for generations. For example, do you know Glarus Schabziger, the oldest branded product in Switzerland? Or the Glarus Tüechli with its iconic paisley pattern – a piece of Swiss design history? Perhaps the sweet Glarus Öpfelbeggeli, which combines tradition and enjoyment?

Traditional Glarner Öpfelbeggeli pastries with powdered sugar on a market stall.
Glarner Öpfelbeggeli are one of the most famous specialties from the Glarnerland region – despite their name, they contain no apples. These handcrafted pastries come in three varieties: sweet with almond filling, sour with plum filling, or “ghürate,” a delicious combination of both. A true taste of Glarner craftsmanship and culinary heritage.
