Glarus Landsgemeinde on Sunday, 3 May 2026

Once a year, Glarus becomes the stage for direct democracy – real, loud and incredibly lively. On the first Sunday in May, the people of Glarus meet on the Zaunplatz to ‘reduce and increase,’ to discuss and vote – by hand gestures, just like in the old days.

Come and experience this unique spectacle of tradition, community and history. The Landsgemeinde is not just about politics; it is about the beating of hearts, togetherness and pure Glarus pride. Guided tour of Glarus to the Glarus Landsgemeinde

To make it easier to follow the Landsgemeinde, a guided tour of the city will take place beforehand. The special procedure of the Landsgemeinde will be explained, as well as background information on the topics to be voted on. You will also learn what is on the menu at the Landsgemeinde. The tour will also explain why Glarus is laid out in a chequerboard pattern and why the city park is called the Volksgarten.
