The main town becomes a golf course
Schwanden, 20 April 2026 – From 1 May 2026, Urban Golf Glarus will offer a new leisure activity for the population: active, surprising and lots of fun. Anyone who wants to get moving and experience the city in a special way can pick up a golf club and discover Glarus in a new way.
Urban golf combines classic golf elements with the urban environment. The game is played not on a traditional golf course, but in the middle of the city. The shots are taken from cobblestone streets, park paths and open spaces. Fountains, street lamps and other defined objects serve as targets. The course takes players through ten holes on central squares and in green oases, and makes Glarus a new and exciting place to discover in a playful way.
Successful model from Switzerland
Urban golf is already very popular in cities such as Winterthur, Chur, Biel and Solothurn. The concept is simple: movement, community and city discovery are combined and require no prior knowledge. In Glarus, the offer is deliberately aimed at both locals and visitors. It complements existing options such as hiking, cycling and climbing, and creates an additional attraction right in the town centre.
Sporty and safe
The game is played with conventional golf clubs and a special urban golf ball that weighs only 14 grams. It flies only about a third of the distance of a standard golf ball and is therefore safe for people, animals and objects. The offer was initiated by VISIT Glarnerland and is suitable for individuals, families, clubs, school classes and companies. The game lasts about two and a half hours. The project is made possible by the support of the main sponsors, the Glarus Cantonal Bank and the Foundation for a Strong Glarus.
Central distribution point in the market hall
Golf clubs and equipment can be collected and returned at the VISIT Glarnerland guest information point in the market hall in Glarus. Participants will also receive a brochure with a course map, rules of the game and other information. Urban Golf Glarus creates a new, uncomplicated leisure experience for the region and provides a fresh stimulus for movement and socialising.
