Organic vegetable bags instead of weekly market: New start in the market hall
Schwanden, 15 April 2026 – The end of the traditional fresh produce market on the town hall square has left a noticeable gap in the centre of Glarus. For over 20 years, the Jud family of farmers from Benken had been offering fresh produce every Saturday, thereby shaping the weekend scene. Since December 2025, the square has been empty – at least as far as regional fresh produce is concerned.
VISIT Glarnerland now wants to close this gap with an unconventional but promising idea: regional organic vegetables in pre-packed bags, sold directly in the market hall.
Instead of the classic market sale with individual products, the new concept is based on vegetable bags that are put together each week. These are offered from Saturday 08:00 to 11:00 from April to November. Customers do not choose individual products, but rather a seasonal selection – freshly harvested and directly from the field. For 33 francs, there is a so-called medium subscription bag, which is enough for two people for about a week and is filled differently depending on the season.
The vegetables are produced by Tim Kürzi in the Soluna market garden in Wangen. They are harvested on Friday evening and sold on Saturday morning – there is no fresher regional produce anywhere.
The new offer brings a bit of market life back to the centre. Fresh, local products should once again become an integral part of Saturdays in Glarus and add to the attractiveness of the market hall.
The initiative shows that the loss of the traditional market does not have to mean the end of regional freshness. On the contrary, it offers the opportunity to rethink the offer – in a more modern, simpler way and with sustainability in mind.
And for those who want to know how good this organic produce tastes, the answer is also to be found in the market hall: a part of the harvest is in fact sent straight to the Fratelli kitchen, where it is regularly used to create seasonal, creative delicacies – straight from the field to the plate.
