The wide valley basin is surrounded by a magnificent mountain ring

To the east rise the Piz Sardona, the Piz Segnes and the bizarre summit series of the Tschingelhörner with the world-famous Martinsloch. To the south are the firn-crowned peaks of the Vorab and the Hausstock, and to the west are the gentler slopes of the Kärpfgruppe.

In addition to the village itself, there are widely scattered numerous hamlets and individual settlements. The actual village centre is grouped around the church with the listed houses, such as the Grosshaus, the Zentnerhaus, the Pfarrhaus and the Suvorovhaus.
The villagescape with its imposing knitted wooden buildings is of national importance and was awarded the Wakker Prize in 1976, the European Year for Heritage Protection and Monument Preservation, and in 1981, 100 years after the landslide, it was awarded the Wakker Prize.

Today, the most important economic sector is tourism with the beautiful ski area at the foot of the Kärpf and the cross-country ski trails in the valley.
The most prominent ambassador for this is the multiple Olympic champion and world champion Vreni Schneider.
In addition, there is a strong agriculture, a diverse industry and the only industrial company with its products Elmer Mineral and Elmer Citro.
The military continues to be an important pillar with the tank firing range on Wichlen. In addition to the military and agriculture, the mountain village is characterized by various service and commercial enterprises.

The hotels and restaurants, the sports railways and the ski schools offer the local population interesting jobs, especially in winter, and thus the privilege for you as a guest to be cared for and served by locals. Various other businesses such as the carpenter's shops, the customer bricklayer, the grocery stores, the bakery, the hairdresser's shop and the sports and textile shops contribute to the good infrastructure of the village.

Together with the more than ten active village associations, Elm is a very attractive and liveable village.
