UNESCO World Heritage TectonicArena Sardona

The mountain landscape between Vorderrheinthal, Sernftal and Walensee is unique in the world because the mountain-building processes are particularly visible there.

Due to this uniqueness, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee added the area around Piz Sardona, which covers more than 300 square kilometres, to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008. One of the most important phenomena is the Glarus main thrust and the Tschingelhörner with the Martinsloch above Elm.

The three main reasons for its inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List:

  • The good recognizability and conspicuousness of the thrust surface in the terrain
  • The beautiful formation of geological structures
  • The extraordinarily great significance in the history of research for the understanding of the formation of mountains

The area can be hiked individually or best with so-called geo-guides.
