UNESCO World Heritage Tectonic Arena Sardona
From stone to life
From stone to life
Mettmen is located in the oldest wildlife sanctuary in Europe, the Freiberg Kärpf. Here, wild animals can be observed in the mountain habitat and the influence of the rock on the flora and fauna can be explored. A geological highlight in the area is the Kärpfbrücke. It shows the Glarus main thrust in spectacular form: the Niderenbach has eaten its way through the Lochsite limestone and created a 50-metre-wide rock tunnel through which the stream flows. The students explore the diversity of this mountain landscape, from the rock bridge, the stones to the animals and plants.

A WORLD HERITAGE SITE IN THE GLARUS REGION
UNESCO designates extraordinary cultural monuments and unique natural phenomena as World Heritage Sites in order to preserve them for future generations. In 2008, the Sardona Tectonic Arena received
this high award. Their uniqueness is based, among other things, on the Glarus main thrust: this geological phenomenon is the best way to understand the processes that led to the formation of the mountains worldwide!
