The Muttsee is beautifully situated at 2473 metres above sea level and, with an area of around 42 hectares, is the highest reservoir basin in Europe. The lake is surrounded by high mountains such as the Nüschenstock, Ruchi and Hausstock and forms an imposing backdrop.
With the ride in the Linthal Tierfed cable car to the Chalchtrittli, you gain almost 1000 metres in altitude before you set off on the developed and widened path to Muttsee in about three hours.
The Muttsee region is not only known for the impressive dam wall, but also for the many ibex that can often be observed.
The Muttsee region is also considered the starting point for long tours. For example, people like to start the tour to the Hausstock from the Muttseehütte, and the long-distance hiking trail "Via Glaralpina" also runs past. If you follow the Via Glaralpina, you will also find the way to the Kistenpasshütte and on to the Bifertenhütte AAC. From the Bifertenhütte you can take the path towards Brigels, or on the second day you can continue towards the Panixerpass.
