Moose – the specialists
The geology of Glarus is characterized by limestone. An exception is the Verrucano rock, which rises to the surface thanks to the Glarus thrust.
Except for the bottom of the valley, there are blocks of Verrucano between Ennenda and Sool. They form small habitat islands for species that can only grow on acidic rock.
Endangered diversity
Around 1100 moss species thrive in Switzerland, 670 of which have also been detected in Glarus so far. This diversity here was created thanks to a structurally rich landscape, which could only be created through the combination of natural processes and extensive forms of human farming. The preservation of biodiversity is an important goal, as 38% of Switzerland's moss species are threatened.
Experience the moss nature trail
The nature trail can be explored on foot from Sool. A one-hour discovery tour leads to the Sola castle ruins and around the Schlossbüchel. The trail is usually accessible between April and October.
