Geophenomena Trail Kerenzerberg

In October 2015, the Geophenomena Trail was renewed and new information boards explaining the geological phenomena were installed.

The trail leads from the Habergschwänd mountain station via Talalpsee and Spaneggsee to the Fronalp Pass and runs partly on the official Sardona World Heritage Trail No. 73. You can learn how glaciers grind rocks, how moraines are formed, how the local rocks write climate stories, and you can read interesting facts about caves, the Talalpsee and the Hellloch sinkhole.

The path between the Habergschwänd and the Talsee measures 2 kilometres. On this short stretch there are rocks with an age difference of up to 100 million years. All of them were formed as deposits on the bottom of a sea. Most of them are limestone. In various places, they contain fossilized former sea creatures, e.g. assilines. In some cases, entire "animal cemeteries" can be found.

Silver and copper ores were mined on the Mürtschenalp between the 16th and 20th centuries. The most important epoch was between 1850 and 1865; during this period, the most investment was made in mining. Up to 50 miners mined the valuable ores in the heyday around 1850. Tunnels and relics of the smelting plants still exist. The remains of the stamping mill, the miners' house and the peat sheds are located in the middle of the moorland of the Mürtschental, a visit to which can be easily combined with a hike to the Murgseehütte and the Murg Valley including the Swiss stone pine reserve. The former Mürtsch mine can only be visited as part of a guided tour.
