Geological site, Lochsite
There is a place on the Sernftalstrasse in the Lochsite where the so-called Glarus main thrust, i.e. the overthrust of the new rocks (slate) with old rocks (Verrucano) during the formation of the Alps, is particularly impressively visible.
Since the 19th century, fundamental knowledge about the construction of the Alps has been gained here. In particular, it was recognized how mountains were formed by blanket thrusts. Previously, earth scientists assumed that rock folds and mountains were formed due to the shrinkage of the earth in connection with the cooling of the earth. The Lochsiten geology is under federal protection and is the "Mecca" of geology students at home and abroad. In the Natural History Museum of New York, a 1:1 cast of the hole site can be admired.
