Forest reserve Vorder und Hinter Risetenwald

Light forests and quiet forest dwellers

The forest reserve is located on a steep south-facing slope. A variety of tree species thrive here: spruce, sycamore, beech, whiteberry, pine and rowan. Because the snow glides on the grass in steep terrain, young trees grow mainly in the shelter of tree trunks, stones or older trees. A sparse forest is created. This also impresses in the Vorder Risetenwald with Schrattenkalk formations.

Silent forest dwellers

The high proportion of dead and old wood and the open, sparse forest areas provide a habitat for various forest dwellers. Countless wood ants crawl on the ground and often build their nests directly on the path. In the treetops, the pygmy owl holds out the prospect of food. Although it is the smallest European owl species, it preys on mice, reptiles and even other birds.

Experience the forest reserve

The forest reserve can be explored on foot from the Vorderschwändi car park in three hours. The circular route leads through the Hinter Risetenwald via the Lochegg back to the car park. The trail is usually accessible between late May and October.
