Altes Strandbad Weesen

From here you have a view over the whole of Lake Walen. The sandy beach is surrounded by trees and also offers shade depending on the position of the sun. Camping and camping are not allowed here, as is stepping on the reeds, fires near plants, etc. Swimming, landing boats and fishing from the shore are permitted. There is no lifeguard, swimming at your own risk! The nearest village is Weesen in St. Gallen.

From the story, recorded by H.W. Ziltener: The area is called "Hüttenbösch", originally it was an island in the lake on which a Roman temple is said to have stood. The information differs. During our school days, the teacher showed us a spring behind the lido that smelled of rotten eggs. The temple is said to have been located there. On the Internet you can find information that the temple was in the area of the outflow of the "Maag". This would then be much further down, as the lake was much larger and the "Maag" only provided the outflow of the lake below the new bridge over the Linth. The Old Lido had 70 bathing houses, a catering establishment, and a (music) pavilion in the water. In addition, there was a regular ferry service from the headland in Weesen to the lido. There are still photos, but the exact data is missing. The "old lido" was probably dissolved between 1960 and 1970. Tradition has it that it was the first lido in Switzerland, and that – when the Zurich-Weesen railway line was built – a "lido train" brought the guests. The old Weesen lido is documented by the "Strandhotel Du Lac", the last owner. Today, nothing is left of the historic lido.
