The Braunwald Alpine Museum opened its doors in autumn 2021. .

It tells the story of the Tödi region, the geological but also the mountaineering. Experience the fascination of the Glarus mountains in a modern and compact way. The museum begins with the unique Glarus geology, which takes you on a unique Swiss journey through time of over 300 million years. Encounter the oldest fossils and dinosaur tracks in Switzerland and enter the only Swiss Volcano Park. Learn more about the Glarus Main Thrust, the centerpiece of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Tectonic Arena Sardona, which can be seen with the naked eye on the opposite ledge.

We continue to the beginnings of mountain sports. To the SAC-Tödi as the founding section of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) and the construction of the Grünhornhütte, the first SAC hut in Switzerland. It is visible from the museum in clear weather.

The history of the Via Glaralpina, the first long-distance hiking trail that circles the canton of Glarus across all vegetation levels and thus connects huts, hotels and inns. The hut warden of the Planurahütte SAC and the hut warden of the Glärnischhütte SAC also talk about their everyday life in the hut.

A special story begins with the Glarus Ski Club, which was the first ski club in Switzerland to be founded in Glarus in 1893.

The tour tells of the production of the first skis and the first Swiss competitions in Glarus, of Rösli Streiff from Glarus as the first female ski world champion, of the skiing legend Vreni Schneider, the best female athlete in Switzerland, and Patrick Küng, the downhill world champion. But also from the local Kessler-Swiss, which manufactures skis and snowboards that are among the best in the world.

A small temporary exhibition can be found in the center of the museum, each of which sheds light on a specific topic.

Along the window front, the Biferten glacier is explained in more detail with an impressive view of the surrounding mountains and glaciers. In this historic Tödi region.

Ski skins with Glarus history: Founded in 1948 by Hans Fischli as a small manufactory in rented premises in Glarus, he began with the production of metal ski poles and climbing backpacks. Hans Fischli, himself a passionate mountaineer and climber, knew what was important: functionality and quality. This shaped his products and brought the success he deserved. He quickly included ski skins and their production in his range. These soon became a topic of conversation among the touring riders.
