1798 in the Klöntal: While the men want to fight against the French in the mountains, the women who have stayed behind discover new freedoms and perspectives through a charming Frenchman.
Information about the play

We are in the year 1798. Revolutionary France invaded the Confederation and spread fear and terror. The men, intoxicated by their own courage, decide to climb the mountains and stop the enemy troops with an avalanche of ice, stones and snow.

The women stay behind and have to take care of the village and everyday life alone. At first, they rely on a different kind of resistance: dirty and unwashed, they want to scare off the French so that they can move on and spare the village. But instead of an army, only one Frenchman appears – Foulon, a charmingly fun-loving French battle painter. The women, previously "among themselves", discover joie de vivre, eroticism and new perspectives, while the men freeze on the mountain and wait for the supposed enemy.

In 1991, Thomas Hürlimann wrote the dialect comedy "Franzos im Ybrig", which was later also performed at the Schauspielhaus Zurich. The Glarus Theatre moved the action to the Glarus Klöntal – the French have also marched in here. The play mixes colourful, fiery and lively historical events with exaggerated figures and situations. At its core, it is about strangeness and encounter: How do people react to the unknown – with fear, defensiveness or curiosity? And how do roles change when familiar structures suddenly disappear?
