The journey is the destination in Freiberg Kärpf
The train from Zurich has just arrived in Schwanden. The station square is bustling with activity and passengers are faced with the difficult decision of which connecting bus to take. Some choose the bus of line 544 to Kies. The bus turns off onto a field path that is no wider than the bus itself, passing Nidfurn and Haslen. The bus continues at a leisurely pace and winds its way up through several hairpin bends. The view stretches across the whole canton to where the mountains become flatter in the direction of Lake Constance. If you take one of the first departures in the morning, you have a good chance of spotting some wildlife such as deer, roe deer or ibex along the route. In winter, the line is operated as a demand-responsive bus service. The small buses used in winter make it easy to reach the Fryberg Kärpf holiday area, even in snow and ice. The Alpsteg and Fryberg stops are reached one after the other. Here, you can stop for a bite to eat and then continue on the next bus, which runs at a tight interval – or you can stay on board, as the bus reaches its final stop just above the valley station of the cable car from Kies to Mettmen, a short time later. There is no need to wait long, as the bus and cable car timetables are coordinated. It’s off to the Mettmen Alp area.

Off to Obererbs in the Alpine region
Passengers who have chosen the line 541 bus in Schwanden will travel through the lovely Sernftal valley to Elm. Here, the bus changes line number several times a day and continues as line 545 to Obererbs in the summer. After a short time, the hamlet of Steinibach is reached before the first steep climb towards Büelstafel begins. This is where the start of the beautiful hiking trail over the Panixer pass to Graubünden begins, passing the large Wichlen military training area. The bus turns onto an Alpine path and winds its way up, passing by cattle pastures, metre by metre. Above the tree line, the start of the high-altitude trail is reached. This trail follows the sun to the mountain station of the Elm-Ämpächli cable car, one of the most popular hiking trails in the canton of Glarus. To top up your energy before the hike, it is recommended to stay at the final stop at the Obererbs ski hut, where you will be well looked after before you can also start from there over the Richetli pass in the direction of Linthal.

Over the legendary Klausen pass
The drive from Linthal over the Klausen Pass is not only a scenic highlight, but also steeped in history. The winding route was once the scene of the legendary Klausen race, which made the hearts of motorsport fans beat faster. A real experience for anyone who loves spectacular Alpine roads. On the Urnerboden, the largest cow pasture in Switzerland, there are countless excursion options. The cable car takes you comfortably to the starting point of Fisetengrat, where hikes of all levels of difficulty await. A visit to the Urnerboden Alpine Cheese Factory is particularly worthwhile: here, fresh Alpine cheese is produced and sold on site. The bus ride to the Klausen Pass is also a treat for the eyes. From here, a short hike takes you to the idyllic Chammlialp, where the Alpine snack bar offers regional delicacies for a pleasant break. The glacier lake below the mighty Clariden rock face is also a place to marvel and discover.
