Glarus Christmas Market is getting bigger and even more magical

From 5 to 7 December 2025, Glarus will once again be transformed into a sparkling Advent world. The popular Christmas market, which first made a splash in the Volksgarten last year, is growing and will now also be held in and around the cosy goods shed. With new atmospheric locations, over 80 market and food stalls and a diverse programme, a wintry festive experience will be created.

The Volksgarten will also be the illuminated stage of the market in 2025. The artistically illuminated trees will transform the park into a colourful sea of light, allowing young and old to immerse themselves in a world of glitter and Advent magic. The lovingly staged lighting creates an atmosphere that invites you to marvel and transforms the entire park into a lively Christmas fairy tale. The goods shed will be a new addition to the market area. The interior will be illuminated in a way that creates a welcoming atmosphere and sets the tone for the Advent season. The goods shed also houses a wooden house in the shape of a crib, where the Samichlaus will welcome the children and where other events will take place.

New market huts around the fountain

For the first time, market huts will be built around the fountain in the Volksgarten. Until now, there were traditional market stalls there. The new huts were realised by Glarus Service in close collaboration with the company glarotent Netstal and the GLKB Foundation ‘for a strong Glarus region’ and will give the market a particularly traditional and atmospheric Christmas atmosphere.

A circus tent as a new event space

For the first time, a circus tent will be set up in the Volksgarten, which will serve as a central stage for various events. It provides a clear structure, creates more space for the programme and reinforces the Christmas market’s character as a meeting place for different age groups. The circus tent makes it possible to perform shows even in the rain or snow.

A varied programme under the patronage of the cantonal churches

The event programme will once again be organised by the Protestant Reformed and Catholic cantonal churches of the canton of Glarus. They will provide the market with its thematic focus and deliberately offer activities that promote encounters, community and the Advent experience. The popular programme points include the ‘Gschichtä-Kutschä,’ which tells children stories in a comprehensible and loving way. We can also look forward to Lanik, the ‘Rägäbogäbänd,’ the Glarus/Ennenda Male Choir, Rudy Herrmann, wonderful alphorn sounds from ‘Glarnerjutz’ and other performances that will add to the musical richness of the market. The sound of the barrel organ will add further traditional accents and round off the festive atmosphere.

A market with great variety

With over 80 market and food stalls, the range of products on offer in 2025 will be the widest ever. Visitors will find a huge selection of handicrafts, gift ideas and culinary specialities. The mix of regional suppliers, creative artists and various gastronomic options will make the market even more diverse.

A coordinated joint project

The Christmas market is organised by Glarus Service in close collaboration with VISIT Glarnerland, the municipality of Glarus and the tb.glarus technical services. The Protestant churches will be responsible for the programme and will set the tone for the content. The cooperation between numerous local players will help the market to continue to grow in 2025 and at the same time to strengthen its regional roots. Over 30 volunteers will also be on hand to help make the Christmas market a magical experience for the public. All information on the Christmas market programme in Glarus: www.glarus.swiss
