Guided Public Tours of the Elm Slate Factory

Amidst cosy clusters of wooden houses, in the Sandgasse near the church, lies the last slate factory in Switzerland.

After production ceased, the "Pro-Elm” foundation acquired the property intending to preserve the last remaining vestige of the once flourishing slate trade for posterity. The entire range of tools, equipment and machines needed for the production of writing tablets have been preserved. Slate dust, sawdust and the smell of glue have returned to the rooms. Nowadays, visitors can discover traditional handicrafts combined with modern educational techniques.
