Freulerpalast / Museum of the Municipality of Glarus

More than just a museum for rainy weather, the magnificent Freulerpalast also serves as the Museum of the Municipality of Glarus with numerous sumptuous showrooms and a variety of exhibitions covering the rich tapestry of textile history, Alpine winter sports and the military.

The Freulerpalast is one of Switzerland's finest 17th-century residential buildings. Kaspar Freuler (c. 1595-1651) from Näfels commissioned the construction of this opulent palace. He served the French Kings as a Swiss Military Contractor. As an artistically minded colonel of the guard, he invited artisans from all over Europe to Näfels, to create an elaborate architectural opus at his behest from 1642 to 1648. Completely preserved today, constructed in 1642, the ornate stuccoed interior, richly ornamented panelling and ceilings are an impressive testament to the artisans' skills and the patron's wealth.

The Museum of the Municipality of Glarus serves as the canton's historical museum based in the Freulerpalast since 1946. It presents the history of Glarus from the origins to the present day. One main focal point is the exhibition on textile printing in Glarus. With impressive testimonies, it demonstrates the pioneering enterprise of Glarus. There is a range of activities on offer for young visitors to the museum throughout the exhibition, providing the perfect opportunity for an entertaining visit with the family.
