When the breakfast egg learns to fly: Märchenhotel in Braunwald opens the world’s first egg gondola lift

At Märchenhotel Braunwald, the day begins anew with a little journey: The order for egg dishes is sent to the kitchen in the egg gondola called the ‘Egg-xpress’ and on a mini Kessler snowboard, which was made by the well-known ski and snowboard manufacturer in Braunwald. The freshly prepared egg dish then floats back to the guest below the gondola. The new attraction was opened in mid-March 2026 in the presence of personalities from the tourism and sports sectors. Martin Nydegger, Director of Switzerland Tourism, and former Swiss national goalkeeper Pascal Zuberbühler were also in attendance.

The ordering process is simple yet playful. Guests choose a mini-snowboard for their egg dish from the breakfast buffet. The options include snowboards labelled omelette, fried egg or scrambled egg. They then write down their additional requests on the snowboard. They then place it in one of the 14 gondolas that are constantly shuttling between the buffet and the kitchen. In the kitchen, the chef prepares the order and sends it back in the next gondola. A small chick, the ‘egg alarm,’ accompanies the order and informs the guest with a fairy-tale-like melody when the dish is ready.

The mini-snowboards are from ‘Kessler Ski’ in Braunwald. The company from Glarus is known worldwide for its high-quality skis and snowboards. The collaboration combines two typical Braunwald stories. The planning and implementation of this special train was carried out by hotel architect Peter Hummel from Hunikat AG.

Martin Nydegger, Director of Switzerland Tourism and thus the highest-ranking Swiss tourism official, says: ‘Such creative ideas show how innovative Swiss tourism can be and underline the positioning of this unique hotel.’

The four-star superior hotel is located in the car-free mountain village of Braunwald at an altitude of around 1,300 metres and is considered one of the most popular family hotels in Switzerland. The new egg gondola lift adds another surprising attraction to the breakfast offer. Pascal Zuberbühler was also thrilled: ‘As a goalkeeper, I caught many balls. But I also had to catch an egg once in a while. However, the ‘Egg-xpress’ is ‘egg-ceptional’ worldwide.’
