Charly’s Chugelibahn Adventure: New Family Project Boosts Summer Tourism in Matt/Weissenberge
Matt/Weissenberge, 23 June 2026: With ‘Charly’s Chugelibahn Adventure,’ a unique, interactive summer experience for families is being created. The project is based on the popular stories of the Glarner author Roger Rhyner’s Geissbock Charly and is scheduled to open in the summer of 2027.
The project group is currently in the planning and funding phase. The project is expected to cost around CHF 750,000. Thanks to the generous support of the canton, the municipality, local businesses and various foundations, around 60% of the funding has already been secured. Further partners and supporters are welcome.
Management
The project is being carried out by the Matt (r)aktiv association in close cooperation with VISIT Glarnerland. The people responsible are:
- Nicole Knecht, Matt: Owner and manager of Aktivhostel HängeMatt; business administrator; mother of two children.
- Yvonne Marti-Birchler, Matt: Owner and manager of Praxis Horuna Netstal; mother of two children and farmer.
- Heiri Elmer-Stürzinger, Matt: President of the Weissenberge Cable Car Cooperative
- Thomas Marti, Weissenberge: Cable car expert; ski patrol; young gastronomy entrepreneur at the Edelwyss mountain restaurant
- Jasmin Schläpfer, Schwanden: Responsible for the Elm holiday region and sustainability / VISIT Glarnerland
Family-friendly attractions
The summer attraction includes:
- Two themed trails with a total of nine ball run stations on the Weissenberge mountains
- Three themed ball run playgrounds on the Weissenberge mountains
- An exciting playground with ball run elements at the valley station of the Matt-Weissenberge cable car
- An indoor playground in the Aktivhostel HängeMatt for bad weather days (already existing)
The focus is on the shared experience for families: Each family brings their own balls with them, which roll along the ball runs through the stations. The themed trails playfully combine the alpine world, culture and regional products of the Glarnerland region.
Sustainable value creation for the region
The project promotes summer tourism, especially for families, and contributes to the long-term revitalisation of the region. An increase in visitor numbers of around 30% is expected.
In addition, restaurants, accommodation providers, railway operators and farm shops will benefit from additional income – through overnight stays, restaurant sales, railway usage and the sale of regional products.
Further information and involvement
The project is still in the funding phase. Sponsors and partners are welcome to support the development of this family-friendly summer attraction.
