Village Matt

The Alps of Krauchtal, Riseten, Vorderegg and Hinteregg extend here. On the terrace, about 500 meters above the village, on the southern slope of the Gulderstock, lie the Weissenberge. This Walser settlement, which has been inhabited even earlier than the valley floor, is accessible by the Matt-Weissenberg cable car (LMW) and is considered the sunniest place in the canton of Glarus inhabited all year round.

The most striking landmark in the village is the Matter Church, which is older than our Confederation. Until the 13th century, the Glarus region formed a single parish with a church in Glarus. Because of the long and dangerous way from the Sernftal valley to Glarus in winter, the abbess of Säckingen and the bishop of Constance allowed the construction of a chapel in Matt in 1261, which was elevated to a parish church as early as 1273.

In the school and sports facilities opposite the church, the upper school students from Engi, Matt and Elm are taught together.
In 1868, Jakob Spälty from Netstal on the Krauchbach built a cotton spinning mill, which offered welcome earnings for almost a century, but ceased operations in 1967.
The federal government acquired the factory site and the buildings and converted them into a troop camp for 450 men.

The two most important commercial enterprises in Matt are the construction business Marti AG, which emerged from the quarry at the northern entrance to the village, and the carpentry and carpentry workshop Holzbau AG. The companies with the same name, which emerged from two independent and independent family businesses, are now under joint management.

Matt has around 400 inhabitants; 25% of the workforce is engaged in agriculture, 57% in industry and commerce and 18% in services.

Thanks to the initiative of the Matt village shop cooperative and broad support from the population, everything necessary for everyday life can still be purchased in the Volg shop.

A hostel in the village itself and an inn on the Weissenberge provide for the physical well-being of the guests.

From Matt, the Matt-Weissenberge cable car leads to 1266m above sea level. M. The sunny plateau (sunniest place in the canton of Glarus) offers an idyllic landscape with countless hiking opportunities. It is a typical scattered settlement with widely enclosed houses and stables, some of which date back to the Walser period. In winter, the Weissenberge are known as a paradise for tobogganing, ski touring and snowshoeing.
