Museum Pulverturm

Since the merger of the municipalities, the building has largely handed over the main part of its function as a village archive to the State Archives. On the upper floor, important topics such as the emigration of Glarners to the USA and the founding of New Glarus remain documented. The ground floor houses numerous exhibits on Glarus military history and shows the production of gunpowder.
The Powder Tower was built in 1756/57 on behalf of the Protestant estate of Glarus by master builder Hans Ulrich Grubenmann von Teufen. The Reformation in the 16th century triggered religious disputes. These made it necessary to build it for the storage of the "Protestant powder".

At that time, the location was about 100 meters outside the village for safety reasons. The building is square with a side length of 6.70 m. The walls are 1.10 m thick.

Between 1842 and 1844, the tower was transferred to the Tagwen Schwanden and was used as a municipal archive. After the renovation of 1952/53, a village museum was set up in it.
