Mettmen-Gämspfad
On snowshoes, you can comfortably trudge through the wildlife reserve for an hour - the view is directed over the Glarus region, the frozen Garichtisee and, with a bit of luck, a chamois. The SBB takes you to Schwanden, from where the Mettmen bus continues to the Kies - Mettmen cable car. Put on snowshoes and you're already on the "Gämspfad" on Mettmenalp. The "Gämspfad" can be walked without previous knowledge with snowshoeing. It is prepared and marked by the Berghotel Mettmen.
Since Mettmenalp is located in a wildlife reserve, one should behave considerately towards the animals in it. The area around the Kärpf in Glarus has been a protected game reserve since 1548. It is the oldest in all of Europe and, with its 106 square kilometres, also one of the largest in Switzerland.
DIRECTIONS By train to Schwanden. From there take the Mettmen bus (reserve 2 hours before departure on +41 78 668 97 72) to the valley station of the Kies - Mettmen cable car. The chamois trail starts from the mountain station.
