Lake Walen lakeshore path

Seashore Path Walensee
Seashore Path Walensee
Bike route from Ziegelbrücke along the Linth canal and Lake Walen via Gäsi, Mühlehorn, Murg, Unterterzen and Mols to Walenstadt. One-way route near the lake with several stage locations and natural public lidos for relaxing, swimming and playing.
The route starts in Ziegelbrücke and follows the signposted Route 9 from SchweizMobil. Initially, it runs along the renatured Linth canal towards Lake Walen.

At Weesen, the route briefly crosses the main road and then crosses the Linth canal. At the disused Weesen station, the railway line is not crossed; the route remains on the lakeside gravel path and leads directly into the Gäsi area on Lake Walen. Here, the transition from the Linth canal to the lakeshore route takes place. The Gäsi is a natural recreational area with ecologically upgraded shoreline zones.

From Gäsi, the route follows the northern shore of Lake Walen towards Mühlehorn and Unterterzen. A striking section runs through several bike tunnels and along steep rock walls directly above the lake. After the tunnels, there is a short, steep climb into the Mülital.

In Mühlehorn, to reach the stage location at the Mühlehorn lido, Route 9 is left. At the station, the track is crossed and then the local signage towards the lido is followed. The Mühlehorn lido is a small, publicly accessible lakeside lido directly on the lake.

Then the route returns to Route 9 and continues to the stage location Mühlehorn Tiefenwinkel. This section ends at a natural, small lakeside beach area.

After that, the route continues along the lakeshore towards Murg. The section runs mostly in immediate proximity to Lake Walen. The cantonal border between Glarus and St. Gallen is crossed. Before arriving in Murg, a prominent rock head is passed, then the route reaches Murg West.

Shortly afterwards, Route 9 is left and the stage location at the Murg lido is reached. The Murg lido is a publicly accessible bathing spot with camping and a direct location on the lake. It offers an unobstructed view along Lake Walen to the east and west.

Back on Route 9, the route again runs in close proximity to Lake Walen towards Unterterzen.

In Unterterzen, the route passes the harbor with the lighthouse on Lake Walen. Then the route passes by the lido Unterterzen at the level of the station. Afterwards, the Walensee resort is passed and the route continues towards Mols.

The stage location Mols offers a possibility to stay with a playground, lawn and bistro.

For the section to Walenstadt, Route 9 runs along the main road. Cyclists and pedestrians partly share one-sided sidewalks.

After crossing the Seez, Route 9 is left and the path towards the Walenstadt lido is followed. The Walenstadt lido forms the end point of the lakeshore path. It has lawns, pebble beaches and catering facilities.

The Walenstadt station is reachable within a few minutes.
