Heil- und Schwefelquelle Luchsingen
For whimsically healing bathing and drinking cures.
The oldest sulphur bath in the Glarus region is in Luchsingen and was already in operation in 1542, but was discontinued in the 19th century. The Luchsingen village association has brought the sulphur spring back to life with a short hiking route and information boards.
The sulphur water rainwater penetrates the gypsum-containing dolomite rock. In this process, the gypsum is dissolved from the dolomite rock and reacts with the help of sulphur bacteria to form magnesium-rich hydrogen sulphide (H2S). What remains is a 'holey' dolomite. On its further way, the acidic sulphur water dissolves the underlying limestone - the Lochsite limestone - until it meets an impermeable silicate layer of the flysch sediments. It flows along this contact surface until it comes to light somewhere as a sulphur source - as is also the case at the sulphur spring in the Luchsinger Tobel.
The healing spring
As early as 1680, in the 'Historia naturalis helvetiae curiosa', the Zurich city physician Johann Jakob Wagner mentions the 'Balneum Luchsingense' as a place of healing against many diseases. In addition, the water, which smells of rotten eggs, contains not only hydrogen sulfide gas, but also the medically effective Epsom salt Na2SO4 * 10H2O (Glauber's salt) - a healing substance that has only been detected at this sulphur spring in the Glarus region.
Accessibility:
The healing and sulphur spring is about 10 minutes above the valley station of the Brunnenbergbahn.
