Glarner Waldperlen / Plattenwald

The Plattenwald forest has an optimal location for warmth-loving trees such as oak, linden, ash, sycamore maple, cherry, and whitebeam to thrive. This is a rarity north of the Alps. The south-facing slope, the warming Foehn wind, and the Nagelfluh rock make it possible. In particular, the oak provides valuable habitat and food for many creatures. To promote the proportion of deciduous trees, the Plattenwald is managed close to nature.
Special plants and animals
In the forest reserve grows the rare and protected Turin master linden mixed forest. This forest type developed during the post-glacial warm period. It hosts orchids as well as the broad-leaved spindle, which is protected in the canton of Glarus. Animals also feel at home here. The nuthatch runs headfirst down the trunk. In summer, it feeds on insects and in autumn acorns are on the menu. The stag beetle, which lays its eggs in dead oak wood, also lives in the Plattenwald. The endangered beetle can be observed at dusk if lucky.
Experience the forest reserve
The forest reserve can be explored on foot from the Niederurnen-Morgenholz cable car in two hours on a circular trail. Another option is to park behind the Niederurnen community hall and walk up and back to the forest reserve via the Schlössli path. This takes about one hour. The path is usually walkable between March and November. An educational trail with panels provides information about the forest.
