Glarner Forest Pearls / Front and Rear Riseten
The app 'Glarner Waldperlen' leads to the most beautiful and wildest forests of the canton of Glarus. The app shows how to get there and provides stories, games, and information on site via GPS. Each forest pearl becomes an experience for young and old with the app.
The forest reserve is located on a steep south-exposed slope. A variety of tree species thrive here: spruce, sycamore maple, beech, rowan, pine, and bird cherry. Because the snow slides on the grass on the steep terrain, young trees grow mainly in the shelter of tree stumps, stones, or older trees. A sparse forest develops. This impresses further in the Vorder Risetenwald with Schrattenkalk formations.
Silent forest inhabitants
The high proportion of dead and old wood and the open, sparse forest areas provide habitat for various forest inhabitants. Countless forest ants crawl on the ground and often build their nests directly by the path. In the treetops, the sparrow owl keeps lookout for food. Although it is the smallest European owl species, it preys on mice, reptiles, and even other birds.
Experience the forest reserve
The forest reserve can be explored on foot from the Vorderschwändi parking lot in three hours. The circular trail leads through the Hinter Risetenwald over the Lochegg back to the parking lot. The trail is generally passable between the end of May and October.
