Forest reserve Plattenwald

Oak forest on Nagelfluh

The Plattenwald has an optimal location so that heat-loving trees such as oak, lime, ash, Norway maple, cherry and whiteberry can prevail. North of the Alps, this is a special feature. The slope to the south, the warming foehn and the Nagelfluh make it possible. The oak in particular offers valuable habitat and food for many creatures. In order to promote the proportion of noble deciduous trees, the Plattenwald is managed in a near-natural manner.

Special plants and animals

In the forest reserve, the rare and worthy of protection Turin master lime tree mixed forest is grown. This type of forest developed in the post-glacial warm period. In addition to orchids, it is also home to the broad-leaved spindle tree, which is protected in the canton of Glarus. Animals also feel at home here. The nuthatch runs down headlong under the trunk. In summer it feeds on insects and in autumn acorns are on the menu. Also in the Plattenwald lives the stag beetle, which lays its eggs in dead oak wood. With luck, the endangered beetle can be observed at dusk

Experience the forest reserve

The forest reserve can be explored on foot from the Niederurnen-Morgenholz cable car in two hours on a circular trail. Another option is to park behind the Niederurnen community center and walk up to the forest reserve and back again via the Schlössli path. This takes a good hour. The trail is usually accessible between March and November. An educational trail with boards provides information about the forest.
