Forest reserve Äugstenwald-Holzflue

Forest on blocks - Explore the Äugstenwald-Holzflue forest reserve with its diverse flora and fauna.

The Äugstenwald-Holzflue forest reserve is dominated by boulders. A special forest stumbles on top of it. Mountain pines manage to grow directly on the boulders, even though it is very dry there. Between the boulders, spruce trees and the Swiss stone pine, which is rare in the canton of Glarus, can be found. The interplay of trees, shrubs and rocky areas results in a mosaic of different habitats. Numerous animal and plant species feel at home here, including the shy black grouse. Silberwald In the forest reserve, the spruce bark beetle was given a free hand. So this little beetle spread over several hectares. Hundreds of dead spruce trees bear witness to this. In the sun, these tree trunks glow silvery. This deadwood is alive. Fungi and insects decomposed it and woodpeckers find a richly laid table here. They eat the insects that live in the deadwood.
