Das Rätsel der Lochsite
On the way to Elm, you will pass one of the most famous rock outcrops in the Alps. An inconspicuous slope in the forest, a rock face 50 m long, 20 m high: The Lochsite. A kind of "Holy Grail" of Alpine geologists. Here you can comfortably study what is visible on the "magic line" up in the mountains: the Glarus main thrust.
The outcrop has been known for about 150 years. At the time, the geologists determined that there was a slate rock at the base of the rock face. Above this lies an overhang, a much firmer and harder, much older sedimentary rock; and sandwiched between them is a layer of 30 – 50 cm thick calcareous rock with wild kneading and folding structures. So an older deposit on top of a younger one – something can't be right, right?
Do you want to solve the mystery of the hole site? The best way to do this is on a short research trip to this magical place, where you can read more about the history of research in old books.
