Circular hike Mürtschenstock
Under the spell of the limestone pinnacles
Among the peaks south of Lake Walen, the towering Mürtschenstock with its ribs and gullies appears like an independent mountain range. While the various ascent routes are reserved for climbers, a circular hike around this rock giant is recommended for hikers. Three passes and two mountain lakes provide changing scenery along the way.
Starting point is the upper station of the Filzbach-Habergschwänd chairlift above Filzbach. Following the signpost "Talsee," you reach the Talalp on a wide alpine path with a slight descent, then take the path towards Hüttenberge, cross the Ruestel (1111 m) in dense coniferous forest, and head downhill to the next junction P. 980. Here the forest thins and opens the view to Lake Walen with the Churfirsten mountain range. On the right, a longer ascent through the Hüttenberge area leads past Tritt and Alt Stafel. Above a wooded steep slope spreads the idyllic Meerenboden, dominated by the limestone walls of the Mürtschen. The next goal is the Robmen meadow saddle (1750 m). Then the path crosses the steep scree fields under the Ruchen to the marshy high plateau of the Mürtschenalp (which can also be bypassed to the right). Sparse path traces now climb on the right to the broad Mürtschenfurggel (1840 m), the highest point of the route. Like a labyrinth of rock blocks, the path winds below the debris-covered western flank of the Mürtschen down to Alp Hummel, stays above the green shimmer of the Spaneggsee, and descends the next ridge in numerous hairpin bends through dense hillside forest into the Hinter Tal. A leisurely stroll continues to the romantically located Talsee. Just above the cozy alpine inn, at the Schweidweg, the circle closes. The hiking day ends with a moderate ascent back to the Filzbach-Habergschwänd chairlift.
