Cheese Pass - Alp Vorderdurnachtal
The Durnach Valley is a wild, steep, and impressive valley. Located on the Grosstaler side at the foothills of the Hausstock, it captivates with three alp farms: Alp Vorder, Alp Mittler, and Alp Hinter Durnachtal.
All three produce the finest Glarus alpine cheese, all three are worth a visit. The cheese pass box can be found here at the alpine hut of Rebekka and Martin Zimmermann, Vorder Durnachtal. They produce cream cheese, herb alpine cheese, as well as alpine raclette cheese, and the alpine kiosk offers many delicacies. A stay in the rustic valley. The Durnachtal is a high valley in the district of Linthal. It is traversed by the mountain stream Durnagel, which originates in the mighty basin at the foot of the Ruchi north face from the hidden Hintersulzfirn glacier. This glacier tongues down to an altitude of 1800 meters and is among the lowest glaciers in the Alps. The right side of the valley lies within the Swiss Federal Hunting Reserve Kärpf. The Richetlipass connects the towns of Linthal and Elm through the valley. Vorder Durnachtal lies at the entrance of the valley basin with the lower pastures Berg and Längen and the upper pasture Heustafel, and is owned by the Stiftung Alp Vorderdurnachtal foundation. The alp extends from 1220 m to 2400 m above sea level. Cows, cattle, goats, donkeys, and pigs are grazed, and alpine cheese is produced. Mittler Durnachtal lies toward Guetbächichamm and ranges from the lower pasture Stäfeli at 1350 m to 1800 m above sea level at the upper pasture Bodmen. It is owned by the municipality of Glarus Süd. Here cows, cattle, and pigs are grazed and about 3 tons of alpine cheese are produced every summer. Hinter Durnachtal lies deep in the valley and stretches from 1380 m at the lower pasture to 1990 m above sea level at the upper pasture Mättli. It is also owned by the municipality of Glarus Süd. Around 30 cows and about 45 cattle are grazed and alpine cheese is produced.
