Cheese Pass - Alp Fittern
Above Matt/Engi lies the Alp Fittern. It is the southeastern neighbor of Mühlebach, below the Fuggstock lies its highest Stafel Chamm.
Alp cheese maker Kaspar Elmer turns the alp milk of the cows into the finest Glarus alp cheese. At the Mittelstafel he also gladly welcomes hikers for a piece of alp cheese or a refreshing cider – and here at the Mittelstafel you will also find the cheese pass box. The hut is easily accessible; the Matt–Weissenberge cable car helps overcome the initial altitude. Then follow the hiking trail towards Fitterenstäfeli (1756 m a.s.l.).
The most beautiful hikes to Alp Fittern:
• As described above via Matt / Weissenberge
• Those who want to go further take the long-distance trail of the Via Glaralpina after the cheese pass Alp Fittern (T4) and come via Gulderstock, Guldergrat, and Gipsgrat into the Mülibachtal, where another cheese pass box awaits at the Oberstafel / cheese maker Melgg Mächler.
• Also in the other direction, via Vorderegg into the Krauchtal, a hike is possible – here in the Krauchtal the cheese pass box awaits at the dairy of Yvonne and Franz Marti-Birchler.
