Cheese Pass - Alp Altenoren

About the origin of the name: "Alt" means high located and "oren" comes from Latin ora meaning edge/border;

The hike starts from Linthal/Reitimatt and takes about one hour. Along the alpine road, it continues uphill until the first huts are reached, and soon after the Horner family alpine hut is reached, where the cheese pass stamp also awaits. Altenoren lies deep in the Grosstal valley, high above Tierfed. It is a magnificent high plateau: the view into the valley and out to the Fronalpstock is grand. The alpine descents of the Altenoren herders are popular far and wide. Altenoren is accessible by a road that was once built by interned Polish soldiers during World War II. On foot, the alp can be reached in about an hour from the Gnüss Reitimatt parking lot. Two of the three alp farms belong to the municipality of Glarus, one to the municipality of Glarus Süd. The cattle graze up to an altitude of 2100 meters above sea level. Beyond that, the mountain path continues to the Claridenhütte SAC. Besides cattle, cows, pigs, and goats are grazed. Alpine cheese and pork are produced.

• To the Claridenhütte SAC: From Linthal SBB on marked mountain hiking trail over Reitimatt – Altenoren Chrummlaui – Altstafel – Geissstein to the Claridenhütte SAC. Circular hike Tierfed – Altenoren – Tierfed:

• From Tierfed via Pantenbrugg to Sandwiiti, then turn right and follow the Walenbach to Wangen. From there along the alpine road via Ahorner, Brügglis, Chrummlaui downhill to Reitimatt and back along the Linth to Tierfed.
