Baumgartenalp

A paradise in the remotest part of Glarnerland. Nowhere does the Tödi, this royal mountain, appear so majestic.

The two-tiered Alp, about 100 hectares in size, lies enchantingly beautiful on a terrain terrace high above the valley end of Tierfed at 1602 m above sea level. The remote cultural landscape is the result of centuries of efforts by our ancestors, who wrested meadows and pastures from scree slopes and rocky wastelands. Already in the 18th and 19th centuries, poets, painters, and travel writers were inspired by the magnificent location and the presence of the Tödi massif.

Sure-footed mountain walkers reach the flower-rich Baumgartenalp on the exposed and partly chain-secured path over the Tritt, which leads from the mountain inn Obbort over steep rock faces to the Alp. The former whey path from the spa inn to the Alp is also part of the long-distance hiking trail Via Glaralpina and a gem of it.

Less exposed, but no less steep is the normal route via Pantenbrugg, Üeli, Schwamm. Knowing that cattle and herders also use this strenuous path makes the approximately 800 meters of ascent feel much easier.

Those who want to save some sweat beads use the Tierfed-Chalchtrittli aerial cableway and visit the Alp from above. But even on this variant, sure-footedness is required: below the mountain station, the mountain path winds boldly and is secured with chains through the short rock passage Geisstritt.
