Restart for the Mühlehorn beach kiosk

The kiosk at the Mühlehorn beach bath will be reopening its doors in the coming days. A new operator, the Fachstelle Augenhöhe (Equal Eye Level) of Pro Infirmis, will take over the operation, which will be organised jointly by people with and without disabilities. The municipality of Glarus Nord and VISIT Glarnerland have jointly prepared the reopening with the IG Mühlehorn.

After the long-standing tenant couple retired, the kiosk at the Mühlehorn beach bath was empty for one season. Now a new operator is taking over the business: the Augenhöhe (Eye Level) department of Pro Infirmis. The department is run on behalf of the Canton of Glarus and promotes the self-advocacy of people with disabilities. It creates opportunities for active participation in social life – not just to have a say, but to take responsibility and contribute one’s own skills.

This idea is put into practice at the beach bath kiosk: people with and without disabilities organise the business together, serve the customers and run the kiosk as a team. The kiosk is open on Wednesday afternoons and at weekends when the weather is good. Whether it is open on one or both weekend days depends on the staffing available. To start with, drinks and ice cream will be on offer, and the range will be gradually extended to include small snacks.

With the reopening, the Mühlehorn beach bath gets its popular kiosk back and at the same time gains a place that brings people together. ‘The kiosk at the Mühlehorn beach bath is much more than just a place to get refreshments for our community. The fact that people with and without disabilities are now jointly taking responsibility here shows how natural inclusion is in everyday life – this concept is a real added value for Glarus Nord,’ says Fritz Staub, the president of the community.

The Glarus Nord community would like to thank all those involved who have worked with great commitment to the reopening over the past few months: the Fachstelle Augenhöhe (Equal Eye Level) of Pro Infirmis for taking over the kiosk operation, VISIT Glarnerland for the project coordination, and the IG M Mühlehorn for the open and constructive dialogue.

She is convinced that the new beach bath kiosk will be widely accepted and will remain in contact with Pro Infirmis, VISIT Glarnerland and the IG Mühlehorn to provide support for the operation if needed.
