No fireworks on August 1st: Forest fire risk remains very high
Department of Construction and Environment • The Forest and Natural Hazards Division continues to assess the current forest fire risk as very high. Open fires are prohibited. Fireworks are banned.
No fireworks and bonfires on 1 August
The rainfall over the weekend was very low. High temperatures are expected until 1 August and beyond, and there is little chance of rain. The absolute fire ban remains in place. This also includes the burning of fireworks and pyrotechnics such as sky lanterns, as well as the lighting of bonfires on 1 August.
The risk of forest fires remains very high
Outdoor fire activities pose a very high risk of forest or field fires. The high temperatures and the dry weather of the last few weeks have kept the risk of forest fires at a high level. The flammability of the dry vegetation is very high throughout the canton. Sparks from a fire, fireworks or discarded smoking materials can cause a fire and lead to a forest fire.
Outdoor fire ban
To protect the forests and the population, the glarnerSach issued a ban on outdoor fires on 16 July 2026 for the entire canton. The ban also includes the burning of fireworks. The ban applies to the entire canton and remains in place until further notice.

The fire ban includes the following measures:
- No outdoor fires
- No fireworks
- No use of charcoal/disposable barbecues
- No August 1st sky lanterns
- No releasing of sky lanterns
- No discarding of smoking materials
’The public is urged to strictly adhere to the fire ban and to immediately report any fire activity to the cantonal police on 117.’
Situation is being constantly re-evaluated
High temperatures and little precipitation are forecast for next week. The risk of forest fires remains very high. The Forest and Natural Hazards Department is constantly re-evaluating the situation.
