Käsepass - Alp Vorderdurnachtal

All three produce the finest Glarus alpine cheese, and all three are worth a visit. The cheese pass box can be found here at the alpine hut of Rebekka and Martin Zimmermann, Vorder Durnachtal. They make Nidelchäs, Chrüüter-Alpchäs or Alp-Raclette cheese and there are many fine things in the Alpkiosk. A linger in the rustic valley. The Durnachtal is a high valley in the district of Linthal. It is crossed by the mountain stream Durnagel, which rises in the mighty basin at the foot of the Ruchi north face from the hidden Hintersulzfirn. This flickers down to an altitude of 1800 metres and is one of the deepest glaciers in the Alps. The right side of the valley lies in the Federal Hunting Banning Area of Kärpf. Over the Richetli Pass, the valley connects the villages of Linthal and Elm. Vorder Durnachtal is located at the entrance to the valley basin with the Unterstafel Berg and Längen and the Oberstafel Heustafel and is owned by the Alp Vorderdurnachtal Foundation. The alp stretches from 1220 m to 2400 m above sea level. Cows, cattle, goats, donkeys and pigs are summered and alpine cheese is produced. Mittler Durnachtal lies in the direction of Guetbächichamm and extends from the Unterstafel Stäfeli at 1350 m up to 1800 m above sea level at the Oberstafel Bodmen. It is owned by the municipality of Glarus Süd. Cows, cattle and pigs are summered here and around 3 tons of alpine cheese are produced every summer. Hinter Durnachtal is located at the very back of the valley and extends from 1380 m at the Untertafel to 1990 m above sea level at the Oberstafel Mättli. It is also owned by the municipality of Glarus Süd. Around 30 cows and around 45 cattle are summered and alpine cheese is produced.
